Vancouver BC – History in 10 Brief Points

Today, Vancouver is one of the most important cities and major economic centers in the world. The population of it's metropolitan area has reached 2,187,721 last year and all signs point towards further rapid growth. In this article, we'll take an extraordinarily brief and simplified look into how it all happened and what were some of the major milestones in its history.

The ancient times - For about four to ten thousands years, the area of todays Vancouver was the homeland of three major groups of native people - the Squamish, Tsliel-waututh and Musqueam. The Aboriginal settlement called Musqueam (from masqui "an edible grass that grows in the sea"), near the mouth of the Fraser River dates back to at least 3,000 years ago. At the time of first European contact, the natives had already larger villages in the areas around present-day Vancouver. First non-native steps - In May 1792, American sailor and trader Robert Gray became the first non-native to enter the "Great River of the West" (Columbia River). The city is named after the British naval captain George Vancouver, whose lieutenant William Broughton explored the upriver area. Settlement - A party of 40 men led by chief factor James McMillan reached what is now the Langley area December 16, 1824. They approached from the west, while sailing on the Fraser River (named after the first European to sail there, Simon Fraser in 1808). McMillan was fascinated by the location and chose a unique tree (known as Hudson's Bay Tree) to remind him of it. Two-and-a-half years later he came back with 25 men and instructions to build a fort, which is known as Fort Langley. It was July 27, 1827. The first non-military settlement in the city limits of todays Vancouver was the farm of the McCleery brothers. Colonel Moody - Perhaps the most important person in the early history of Greater Vancouver - he selected the routes for today's roads and the location of the first city. He quickly realized the strategical disadvantage of Fort Langley and built New Westminster, which became the capital of the colonial settlement. Gassy Jack - John Deighton, a former riverboat captain, arrived with his family and a barrel of whiskey, which later allowed him to bribe the nearby mill workers to build him a saloon in exchange of free drinking. Funnily enough, the construction was completed was in one single day, and it became a famous gathering spot for mill-workers and visiting sailors. "Gassy Jack", as nicknamed for his never ending enthusiasm and visions, has his own statue in this area today, called Gastown. Gold rush - In 1858, gold was discovered on the Fraser River. It triggered a massive invasion of more than 25,000 Americans with high hopes and forced the governor to declare the area a British Colony. Trading - Vancouver has been the center of fur trading and soon became one the most important cities in the Pacific Northwest from an economic standpoint. After the construction of the Panama Canal, Vancouver's seaport was able to compete with the major international ports for global trade because it qualified as an alternative route to Europe. Canadian wood would become famous around the world, and it brought quick prosperity to the Lower Mainland. Strikes and depressions - Despite the richness in natural resources, Vancouver had a volatile economy. Major recessions and depressions hit the city hard in the late 1890s, 1919, 1923, and 1929, which only fueled social tensions, a general black spot in the city's history. Racial tension - Unfortunately, Vancouver has a sad history in terms of hatred and racism, especially towards Asian minorities. One of the extreme "highlights" was an act which restricted Chinese immigration and imposed a $50 Head Tax on every person amongst other restrictions. This resulted in the highly inhuman fact that many Chinese workers were unable to bring their families over to join them. Population growth - The population of Vancouver increased rapidly - while it was slightly under 20,000 in 1891, it grew to over 300,000 just 40 years later. Today, more than two million people are living Greater Vancouver area. The yearly increase is around 40,000 and rising. With having a reputation of one of the most livable cities in the world, it's surely no coincidence...

The solid Italian banks

In these days the stock market is falling and negative marking records, never seen before.
The crisis has arrived from the United States and has unfortunately begun to affect European banks.
And now the city is a legitimate question: "Can I trust my bank?", "We are sure that not fail?".
Both are fine questions.

To hear the politicians of our banks have their backs covered, but if you knew that the system is that you say collapse? Creereste total panic?

Surely we all know how the banks are scrupulous in investing that money and rarely lose money.
Who would have thought that perhaps we should thank the Italian banking system for bank safety?
And it is true!

If the events will take place in the most simple and without problems, we have to thank that very system that so much hate, that allows banks to self sometimes even by violating the rules and tightening strong in his hands the debtor.

The rates Euribor began the descent

Here at last with this expectation news Euribor rates are falling.
After a year of continuous climb increasingly fast, now the rates have reversed the trend, and as for oil falls.
Draghi as he announced the quarterly Euribor rate (a lot used for the calculation of the installment of the loan) reached 5%, while the monthly has touched 4.69%.

We hope that these decreases have considerable and immediate influence on the rate of loans granted.
Perhaps it is time to hope in being able to lower the rate of the loan right now that started the new procedure for renegotiation provided by the government.
We hope the Euribor continues with its downward trend.

The current crisis in the international stock exchanges is helping the largest increase in cyber attacks on economic, never seen before

The laboratories of Panda Security have issued a security warning by declaring a direct link between the recent downward trend of stock exchanges and an increase of new threats. The two areas are closely connected with the past and the instability of the market has resulted, in last month and a half, the emergence of a large number of attacks targeted. In addition, laboratory analysts are convinced that the 'increase of malware is connected to the fact that now the cyber criminal objectives have not hit, because of consolidation in banking and mergers that may take place between banks.

Luis Corrons, technical director of the laboratories of Panda Security says "when we began to examine the specific effects that hackers had on the economy during periods of crisis, we found an alarming report: Internet crime is closely tied to the economy. ” Based on thorough research and analysis of new malware samples, we believe that criminal organizations are attentive to the performance of the market and exploit for maximum profit. "

According to the laboratories, the new strategy was developed in response to the consolidation occurred in the banking sector, after several governments in the world have prepared plans for saving multi millionaires.
All this will lead to a reduction of banks in the long term and the perception of instability in the financial community make it a less attractive target. This has increased the amount of other types of malware, such as adware, which under normal circumstances, it would rank second behind the Trojans.

Continue Corrons "the cyber criminals have to increase their activities to reach as many people as possible, through campaigns designed to achieve satisfactory earnings. For example, we have witnessed a significant growth in the number of fake antivirus software that deceive users to convince them to carry out banking transactions online and thus enable cyber criminals to steal their information through phishing activities. Our data show, moreover, that these fake antivirus campaigns are generating profits in excess of 10 million Euros each month to the underground. "
Here are some details of the laboratories of Panda Security:

  • On average, the market of the United States has suffered a fall from 3 to 7% in the period between 1 September and 9 October 2008. Trend in malware has been the opposite: it grew substantially in the bags while plunged.
  • From 5-16 September 2008, the indices Dow Jones, NASDAQ, S & P 500 Composite rose by a rate of 0.0 to a negative -3.0% and beyond. During the same period, the Spanish IBEX 35 indexes and British FTSE 100 has suffered a major fall. We have seen, however, a growth of cyber threats. For example, from 8 to 10 September, the daily volume has increased from 10,150 to 24,000.
  • From September 14-16, the market values have declined from -0.5 to -5.5%, while the malware has grown by 50% every day, from September 14 of 8276 to more than 31,404 copies on June 16th

Corrons says "come show these data, the intentions of cyber criminals to create malware for economic gains they never end. The authors of threats continually adapt their strategies to the economic situation in place. Being aware of this and doing a lot of attention, we will be better prepared to protect ourselves from life and the economy and real dangers of malware. "
